To meet the growing demands of New York City 's athlete population, there is the need for additional dollars and volunteer support. An expected $15 million will be needed to facilitate the project's term — to cover New York City 's anticipated growth by 2010. With your help, we can meet those costs.

Goal #1:

To secure sponsors to cover the cost of at least one year of sports training and competition for each new athlete.

Support Growth: Sponsor Our Athletes

Special Olympics programs are offered at no charge to athletes. We provide quality sports training and competition at the best available facilities for absolutely no financial commitment from the athlete.

Adding 2,500 participants from 2005-2006 is a great confidence builder. As of September 2006, there are 22,968 athletes who participated in 132 competition opportunities in 16 sports in New York City . Our goal for 2010 is to have 40,000 athletes participating in over 250 competitions in a minimum of 22 sports. These programs serve people 8 and older, but our Young Athletes™ program begins teaching skills to children as young as 2. And our Athlete Leadership Programs help our athletes excel in such roles as spokespersons, board members and team officials.

Goal #2:

To increase volunteerism and to offer new and existing coaches the opportunity to pursue additional training for the benefit of our athletes.

Support Volunteerism: Sponsor Our Teams

Our sports programs work so well because of our coaches. These fantastic volunteers give countless hours to the athletes, and at times pay for transportation and other necessities out of their own pockets.

In 2005, 133 new coaches were trained and became active in New York City .

Volunteer training held 15 classes and 9 certified coaches' education classes.

With the growth of New York City 's athlete enrollment, our objective is to have 1,000 active coaches and 6,000 volunteers by 2010. Our coaches and other volunteers range in age from teenagers on up, and they truly form the backbone of Special Olympics.

Goal #3:

To increase the number of training clubs and recruit more volunteers for 40,000 athletes by 2010.

Open the Heart of a Neighborhood: Sponsor Our Training Clubs

In 2005, there were 633 training clubs in New York City . The goal for 2010 is to have 1,000 training clubs in diverse communities.

By expanding and strengthening these programs in conjunction with community and religious groups, university programs, fraternal organizations and civic clubs, Special Olympics can reach into urban areas, and also to create outreach programs for ethnic minorities and low-income families.

Goal #4:

To secure and retain quality facilities to train, support and encourage our athletes to succeed.

Make a Season Happen: Sponsor Our Venues

Over our three annual Special Olympics sports seasons, our New York City athletes train and compete in 16 sports. Facilities are in great demand and rental costs are extremely high.

Goal #5:

To mobilize resources and develop winning strategies to strengthen fundraising initiatives.

Help Spread the Word

Our Global Messengers — Special Olympics athletes who serve as spokespeople, and who are inspiring voices of our movement — will be happy to help you bring the Special Olympics message to others. Some possibilities are to host an awareness gathering at your home or office; participate as a sponsor at existing fundraising events; connect Special Olympics to media partners, or help expand Special Olympics' mailing list.

Making a Difference

With your help, we can meet all of our goals. We look forward to your support, and to providing you with regular updates on how you are helping the Special Olympics athletes of New York City — and by extension, the worldwide mission of Special Olympics.

Thank you!
