2008 State Summer Games in Binghamton

Sports Spectacular set for June 12 to 14

All events free and open to the public

SCHENECTADY – Special Olympics New York's 2008 State Summer Games in Binghamton is just weeks away, and volunteers are needed to fill key roles in support of the competitions. For information on volunteering and to register, please visit www.specialolympicsNY.org and click on Summer Games, or email volunteer@nyso.org .  Volunteers can be individuals or groups.

Volunteers are needed to:

Staff the following sports venues: Aquatics, Basketball, Bowling, Gymnastics, Powerlifting, Track & Field, Tennis and Volleyball. 
Set up and break down sports venues, and distribute lunches to athletes and coaches.

Support Opening Ceremonies, the Ice Cream Social and Victory Dance.
Be “Fans in the Stands” at Opening Ceremonies and at sports venues, cheering the athletes on to victory.

“We always receive great support from the residents, business groups and civic organizations in Binghamton for our many training programs and athletic events” said Special Olympics New York President and CEO, Neal J. Johnson. “We are extremely grateful for the community's contribution to our State Summer Games.”

The State Summer Games is the largest of more than 400 competitions held each year by Special Olympics New York throughout the state. All events are free and open to the public

Opening Ceremonies are Thursday, June 12 at 8:00 PM at the Events Center , Binghamton University .  The ceremonies will feature the traditional Parade of Athletes, dynamic entertainment and the conclusion of the statewide Law Enforcement Torch Run, which brings the Flame of Hope to light the Special Olympics Cauldron. 

Athletic Competition is on Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14, in eight Olympic-style summer sports.  Binghamton University will host the Games and most of the competitions. Outside venues for some competitions include Aero Gymnastics, Davis College , Midway Lanes, SUNY Cortland and the Binghamton Branch of the YMCA. 

Special Olympics New York, which does not charge athletes to participate, provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in 22 Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Approximately 2,200 athletes and coaches will take part in the State Summer Games. Senator Libous is Honorary Chair for the Games.

The 2008 State Summer Games are made possible through the generosity of State sponsors, Knights of Columbus, Civil Service Employees Association, New York State United Teachers and New York Lottery; New York State Correctional Officers Police Benevolent Association, New York Fraternal Order of Police; Media sponsors WBNG-TV of Granite Broadcasting, WBNF Radio and all Citadel Broadcasting stations and Time Warner Cable; also the Federation of New York Insurance Professionals, CVS/pharmacy and the New York State Rental Dealers Association.
