Why a Letter Writing Campaign Works

The easiest and most effective way to raise a lot of money is through a letter writing campaign. One walker raised more than $3,000 by writing letters to people she knew.

• Compile a mailing list of friends, family members, coworkers, vendors, or anyone else you can think of. You will be surprised by how many people respond to your letter.
• Make sure that you include an ask amount, a deadline, and a way to respond. Including a self-addressed stamped envelope is a good idea.
• Use the sample letter on this page as an example of a letter that you can use to help get you started.

Sample Letter
Dear (Name):

It’s time for me to lace up my walking shoes and help turn miles into medals for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.

For 37 years, Special Olympics has provided year-round athletic training and competition for people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics gives them the opportunity to demonstrate their skills, sportsmanship and victories. All of this is at no charge to the athletes or their families.

I have chosen to walk in Miles for Medals, a walk-a-thon, to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics and its programs. Please sponsor me in this walk to help others achieve their dreams. You can send a donation of $25, $50, $100 or as much as you would like. Please make your check payable to “Special Olympics New York” and mail it back to me in the self-addressed stamped envelope that I have included with this letter. If your company has a matching gift program, please include the matching gift form in this envelope.

I also encourage you to join me at Miles for Medals on (insert day) at (insert walk location). For more information, go to www.specialolympicsNY.org.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Sincerely,

(Signature)
