FALL GAMES 2008

Triumph in Rochester

On October 3-4, nearly 1,200 athletes and coaches came together in Rochester to celebrate and compete in Special Olympics New York's 2008 State Fall Games. Athletes had the opportunity to demonstrate their outstanding abilities in a multitude of competitive sports, including Cycling, Soccer, Bocce, Cross Country Running, Equestrian, Roller Skating, Softball and Skills events. Throughout the weekend, the athletes' extraordinary demonstrations verified how vigorous training, courage and commitment to a given sport can lead to not only medals, but a true sense of accomplishment.

For nearly four decades, Special Olympics New York has been committed to changing lives and fostering a positive environment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

For these Games, we introduced the "Be a fan" tm program and it was very well received. Tapping into the core values and attributes that everyone can appreciate -unity, acceptance, empowerment, dignity, courage, strength, pride, confidence and fun; we were able to connect people with the Special Olympics movement better than ever.

The Games could not have been held without the support of our coaches, families, volunteers and families. Special thanks to Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn of Monroe County , our Games Organizing Chair and to Wegmans, the Games Presenting Sponsor, whose program; "Eat Well, Live Well" is a message to our athletes and all of us to lead healthier lives. State Sponsors included New York Lottery, NYSUT, A Union of Professionals and Knights of Columbus. Gold level sponsors include Monroe County Sports Commission and County Executive Maggie Brooks, and Wal*mart a sponsor for our Healthy Athletes program. Other major sponsors included CSEA, NYSCOPBA, Mattel, Unity Health/TSE Sports and Sam's Club.
