World Games
2011 WORLD SUMMER GAMES - ATHENS - June 25 - July 4, 2011
The World Summer Games will host some 7,500 athletes from 185 countries supported by 40,000 volunteers and 3,500 officials. It will bring together thousands of families and spectators as well as celebrities, journalists, dignitaries, heads of state and leaders in the fields of education, health care, business and sports, all in support of Special Olympics athletes as they compete and celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship. It will also mark the first time that our founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver, two years after death will not be part of it.
Special Olympics athletes of all ability levels will compete in more than 22 different Olympic-style sports.
Special Olympics New York Athletes become eligible for selection by winning a Gold Medal at a previous State Games competition. As per our General Rules and criteria for advancement, those Gold Medal Athletes who meet the criteria for Team USA are selected randomly. Team USA will be holding its National Training Camp March 28 - April 1, in San Diego, California in preparation for the Games in Athens.
Special Olympics New York does not charge the athletes, their parents or caregivers to participate and relies on the contributions of individuals and sponsors to support this effort.
